Selection of Membrane Materials

Created on 11.19
Membrane materials used in architectural membrane structures are broadly categorized into PVC membranes and PTFE membranes based on their coating materials. The appropriate selection of membrane material depends on factors such as the building's scale, purpose, form, service life, and budget.
PVC Membrane (PVC-Coated Polyester)
0
PVC membranes are more cost-effective than PTFE membranes and offer advantages such as material flexibility, ease of fabrication, and simplicity in construction. However, it falls short of PTFE membrane in strength, service life, and fire resistance.
PVC membrane consists of polyester fabric coated with PVC (polyvinyl chloride). For general architectural applications, the PVC-coated fabric undergoes surface treatment with a few microns of acrylic resin to enhance stain resistance. Nevertheless, discoloration, staining, and deterioration occur after several years. The typical service life of PVC membranes ranges from 5 to 8 years depending on the environment. To enhance weather resistance, recent developments have introduced fluororesin coatings applied over the PVC coating, improving both weather resistance and stain resistance. PVDF: PVDF is the abbreviation for polyvinylidene fluoride resin. Materials coated with PVDF resin on the surface of PVC film are called PVDF film. Compared to standard PVC film, PVDF film has a service life extended to over 10 years. PVF: PVF is the abbreviation for polyvinyl fluoride resin. PVF membrane materials are produced by laminating a thin film of PVF resin onto the surface-treated PVC membrane. They offer superior durability and stain resistance compared to PVDF membranes. However, their limited processing, installation, and fire-retardant properties restrict their applications.
PTFE Membrane (PTFE Coated Fiberglass)
Durability:
The PTFE coating exhibits exceptional stability against acids, alkalis, and UV radiation, resisting discoloration and cracking. The fiberglass substrate maintains its strength and tensile properties over extended use. Typically white in color with high light transmission, the membrane boasts a service life exceeding 25 years.
Stain Resistance:
The PTFE resin coating possesses a low surface friction coefficient, making it inherently stain-resistant and easily cleaned by rainwater.
Fire Resistance:
PTFE membranes meet fire-rated material standards in nearly all countries, qualifying them as a suitable alternative to other roofing materials for equivalent applications.
